Drones under 250 grams — What can I do, what do I have to consider?
Drones weighing less than 250 g weigh barely more than a bar of chocolate — and yet there are clear rules for these models as well. The good news: If you stick to a few simple guidelines, you can fly completely without a permit in many cases. In the following article we explain what is allowed and what you should pay attention to.
Do I need a permit?
For drones under 250 g — such as the DJI Flip or the Mini 4 Pro — you need no specific permit for normal operation. A drone driving license (A1/A3 or A2) is also unnecessary as long as you abide by the applicable rules.
Important: You must register yourself at the Federal Aviation Office (LBA), get your eID (operator ID) and must have a liability insurance. Your eID doesn't need to be visibly attached to the outside of the drone — a sticker in the battery compartment, for example, is sufficient.
Where can I fly?
With a C0-certified drone (under 250 g), you can:
✅ Fly in residential areas, including property — if the owners expressly agree
✅ Fly close to people, a minimum distance is not required
❌ Don't fly over crowds
❌ Don't fly over sensitive areas, e.g. police deployment sites, federal roads (without special permit), or industrial plants
What applies in public spaces?
In parks, across roads or in cities, there are often additional rules. Before every flight, use tools such as Dipul.de to find out whether you're allowed to fly in a specific area. In the tool you can also see Restricted zones such as airports or controlled airspaces.
And the issue of 'data protection'?
Filming people is not allowed even with mini drones – unless they have given their explicit consent. For example, if you're flying over residential properties, inform residents in advance with a notice or by informing them directly.
The 1:1 rule — what does that mean?
If you want to fly close to roads, railway lines, or waterways, the following rule applies: your flight altitude must not exceed your distance from the infrastructure. Additionally, you must maintain a lateral distance of at least 10 meters, unless you have obtained permission from the relevant authority.
Practical tip
Even though mini drones are excluded from many rules, the more responsible you fly, the more relaxed everyone involved remains.
